The United Controls Group has significant experience in control systems for engine and turbine driven generator sets. The United Controls Group has designed and delivered numerous PLC based controls upgrades for Rolls-Royce gas turbines generator sets and Cameron brand reciprocating engine generator sets. UCG has also supplied complete Fire and Gas Safety Systems for gas turbine packages for several offshore clients, including Total, ExxonMobil, and Petrobras.

Offshore drilling is not particularly a new concept; in fact it was first introduced by H. L. Williams in 1887 in California. The drilling platform was 1000 plus feet from shore connected by a pier that was built specifically for drilling deck access. Kerr-McGee Corporation drilled the first well from a fixed platform offshore out-of-sight of land. As the industry entered the last decade of the 20th century, advancing technology ensued. New depth records for drilling reached 7,625 feet in the Gulf of Mexico, and Shell Oil's platform "Troll," which stands in the North Sea in 1,000 feet of water, 1,500 feet high, became one of two man-made objects visible with the naked eye from the surface of the moon. (1) As the platforms became more sophisticated the power demand to sustain production and personnel living accommodation became a major design consideration. Today, gas turbine gen sets make up the majority to the power generation on offshore platforms and FPSOs. The generator sets power the drilling and production activities for the entire platform which if interrupted can cost millions of dollars of lost production.

In the case of Orange County Sanitation District we furnished eight new control panels for eight Cameron LSVB four stroke engine generator sets. The contract also included Master Station Controls and the controls for steam turbine generator set. See the complete details by clicking here.
The project for American Electric Power , a turnkey contract, entailed replacing the control systems for a Rolls-Royce 501 KB standby generator package. The 3 MW standby gen set is located in AEP’s main corporate tower, in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The critical operations which are administered within the facilities require (mandated by the PUC) the utmost reliability in the power supply of the facility. Rolls-Royce Energy Systems recommended the United Controls Group to AEP based on our fuel management and generator control systems expertise. Click here for complete details.
Rolls-Royce aeroderivative RB211-GT61 gas turbine DLE (Dry Low Emissions) has become a world renowned in power generation including Combined Heat and Power (CHP) applications. One client, Abener Energia, S.A of Spain, installed the 30 MW unit in base load CHP plant in Carrico, Portugal. While the plant had been operating without flaw, the controls systems were of an earlier vintage and had been deemed obsolete. Rolls-Royce called on the United Controls Group to retrofit the existing FT110 system with an UCG system based on the current design standard using two Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 5000 PLCs. Given the arduous computational demands of the DLE system, one PLC is dedicated to the gas generator control and the other to control and monitor the balance of package, including the electrical generator.
